Although I’m not able to celebrate with my immediate family in the US, I am no stranger to birthday celebrations abroad. In fact, here’s a quick recap of birthday’s I’ve celebrated while living abroad:
* * * This post has been updated to reflect my most recent birthday abroad * * *
21st Birthday in Segovia, Spain (2005)
This was actually a day trip from Madrid, where I was studying abroad at the time. That night we returned home to Madrid and partied Spanish style!
23rd Birthday in Copenhagen, Denmark (2007)
My favorite thing to do on my birthday is eat sushi! Luckily, this year I did it at an amazing sushi restaurant in Copenhagen (Sticks’n’Sushi) surrounded by my parents, brother and cousins.
24th Birthday in Copenhagen, Denmark (2008)
In 2007, I had a very unique experience of moving back home with my parents…who were living as expats in Copenhagen! I started my master’s degree program there and lived with them for a year. This picture is from my grown up (parents were there) party. I can’t post the “real” party picture, but trust me when I say it was a great day all around!
25th Birthday in Copenhagen, Denmark (2009)
All I wanted to do this year was spend some time with friends family. And I did just that–starting with a visit to the world’s second oldest amusement park, Tivoli Gardens!
[Side Note: the oldest amusement park is also in Denmark!]
26th Birthday in Copenhagen, Denmark (2010)
Following Danish birthday traditions, my amazing roommate not only sang me the Danish birthday song, but she also made me this awesome birthday cake (lagekage), with Danish flags and all! She also helped me celebrate one of my most memorable birthdays to date! The celebrations included a dinner party at our apartment with my closest friends, a girls-only sushi dinner with my former (Egmont) floormates and a trip to Baku, Azerbaijan! Yeah. It was a pretty awesome week!
30th Birthday in Ankara, Turkey (2014)
This year’s festivities kicked off with my first visit to a Turkish bath (it was AMAZING), alone time with my husband and (starting tomorrow) a week in Istanbul with a dear from visiting from the US.
31st Birthday in Sweden (2015)
My husband surprised me with a weekend getaway to Sweden’s 2nd city, Gothenburg. There, we took in the sights, ate delicious food and explored th The archipelago of Gothenburg via ferry.
Wow. Can’t believe how lucky I’ve been to always be surrounded by love on my birthday…no matter where in the world I’ve been.
Looking forward to celebrating many more birthdays in future homes away from home.
