The Magic Happens Here

Some people ask why are we obsessed with travel? We want to respond with “the real question here is why aren’t YOU?”…but of course, we don’t say that. We don’t because we know that everyone acts according to his or her highest value. For someone like us, travel is something deeply valued. Its a borderline obsession (see: My Life as an Addict).

You see, for those of us fortunate enough to have traveled beyond our comfort zones, we have tapped in to a different part of our soul that we never knew existed. There is something exhilarating about being in a place where you don’t understand the language, food or traditions; but you know you have the opportunity to learn about them all! Travel and exploration isn’t just a thing some of us do on the weekends or only when we have extra money. There are those of us who will go to no ends to find a way to travel. Its in our blood. Its who we are, not what we do.

So for those who don’t understand why we’d forgo buying our first ‘family home’ and would rather spend our down-payment on a trip around the world, or why we would cancel our cable TV package (yes, we’re doing that!) to save some money for traveling, let us explain how and why we’re wired differently than most:

  • MONOTONY. There is a quote I once read that said “Adventure May Hurt You But Monotony Will Kill You”. This is true on so many levels. For us, there is no worse feeling that monotony. The feeling of knowing that tomorrow will be the same as today (especially when today wasn’t that exciting!). Some people choose to spice things up by moving to a new city, state or country. For these people, the excitement comes from exploring new places, meeting new people and trying to make it a place you can call home. This is quite intimidating for many people, but have no fear, you can bring newness into your life by stepping outside of your current comfort zone and routine. But, to avoid monotony is not to move around every 6 months (although that is one way), but to try new things. Join a new club, pick up a new sport, get out there on Groupon and purchase your next adventure. There are many ways to create an exciting life that stimulates you. You need change in order to stay on your toes and to stay energized.Right now, we take advantage of all the awesome lectures and cultural events on campus and in our community. It’s pretty amazing how much is available to us!
  • TRAVEL-BUG. You may not believe it, but the travel-bug exists….and our bodies and minds are infected with them! Ok, on a serious note, once you get a taste for travel, its hard not to ‘get the bug’ and want to do more of it. There is just something about having a magical experience somewhere new that makes you want that feeling again (scientists probably call that feeling adrenalin, but we’ll call it magic!). Its not the distance between your home and adventure —but how much you stretch yourself and your mind that matters.
  • CURIOSITY. Most simply put, we are curious to learn how and why other people differ than us. That is why we choose to explore not only ‘touristy’ destinations (which are tourist hot spots for a reason), but we like to get off the beaten path to see what is going out outside of the mainstream attractions. It is fascinating to get a glimpse into the lives of others and try to understand (if that’s even possible) why they live the way they do.

So if you don’t understand why some of us choose a non-traditional path in life, just remember this. We all march to the beat of our own drum….and our drum happens to beat all over the world!
